The Mendips Cabling Project – Hinkley Point Connection

The Mendips cabling project was a National Grid project connecting Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station to the national gridThis is over 50 km of which 14 km ran through an area of natural beauty called the Mendips. Through this section of work the twelve separate 400KV cables had to be laid in trenches so as to not affect the environment in the long term. This was a complete project as each cable had to be laid with precision based on the depth of the cables. If the twelve cables had to go under a water course or road they needed to be spaced out to avoid the cables getting hot and not working efficiently. JG Engineering were involved in the initial surveying and setting out of the cable routes and later were involved in some of the modeling elements of the works as the design did not work correctly. Models produced by JG Engineering were then uploaded to the GPS machine controlled machines to allow the trenches to be excavated correctly.
